Tummy time can be challenging and uncomfortable for some babies. It’s ok and normal. Here’s recommendations on what to do when your baby becomes fussy during tummy time.
- If your baby fusses during tummy time, take a break. The first goal is comfort. Reaching the goal of comfort in tummy time means that your baby can be in tummy for a short period (a few minds) without getting upset.
- Crying stressed-out tummy time doesn’t have much developmental benefit. They aren’t strengthening their muscles and using the movement and skills we want them to.
- It’s not that beneficial to continue tummy time if they’re unhappy. Once they communicate they need a break, roll them out.
- Show your baby you can be trusted to help them when they need it. Let tummy time be a way that you help your baby learn that you’re a respectful and responsive parent.
- If your baby is not responsive to tummy time, it’s okay. The sessions will be short, and you will be right there supporting them.
- If you do get to the point of comfort and they fuss a little, offer their favorite play toys to help make tummy time more interesting and make it a bit longer.
- Here’s some play toys to incorporate in your little one's next tummy time:
- High-Contrast Art Gallery
- Sensory Crinkle Pocket
- A Mirror
- A book
If your baby continues, continue to offer them a break they need.
