Week 31: At-home activities for 9months+

Here are some fun things to do with your growing 9month+ baby:

A nature walk

Simple but so beneficial, especially with the weather being good right now, take advantage of a nature walk! Walking with your baby provides many great opportunities to talk to your little one, and getting fresh air is a great way to calm your baby, a perfect addition to your daily routine. Research says that babies who spend time outdoors have increased concentration skills. Here are some suggestions to mix it up. Observe animals around you - from the birds in the trees to your neighbor’s dog barking. Invite your baby to feel the grass and trees. The smooth, bumpy, or grainy textures in nature are excellent for developing their tactile sense. Model using all five senses by saying something like “I see the big clouds,” “I’m touching the smooth leaves,” and “I hear the dogs bark.”

Ribbon tugging Grab some leftover ribbon and increase your baby's fine and gross motor skills. You only need is some Christmas or birthday ribbon (don't throw it away), painter’s tape, and scissors. Cut the ribbons, put painter’s tape on the top of each ribbon, and place it on the wall close enough so your baby can reach it while sitting. Supervise for safety, and let the fun begin!

Teaching your baby different smells (great activity for tummy time too) Gather strong-smelling items like herbs, spices, essential oils, coffee, fruit tea leaves, vanilla pods, lavender, and cinnamon sticks. Place the item inside plastic spice containers or clear salt shakers and invite your baby to shake it to release the scent. Add slices of orange or lemon, mint or rosemary leaves, or a few drops of essential oil to the water for a scent-focused sensory tray.
